How to defragment a Hard disk?

Why should you defragment your Hard disk?

Disk Defragmentation improves the performance of your system and makes the machine faster. What it does is takes all the fragments of data and organizes it at one place so that retrieval becomes easier.

To take an analogy think of a cupboard, you keep putting things there and then retrieving them. In the process the cabinets become full and you have to force fit things. For instance say that the upper cabinet is mostly full and you cannot place an entire set of three books there as you would like to but can only fit in one book their and must fit the other two in the lower cabinet.

When you have to take these three books out you would have much rather had them at the same place but now they are in a couple of places and you end up wasting time. If now space is vacant at the second cabinet you would put the first book there and have them all at the same place much like defragmentation, where data is organized such that it is available at one place rather than having fragments available at various places.

How to Defragment your hard disk?

Step 1: Click on “start” and point to “All Programs”

Step 2: Pont to “Accessories” then “System Tools”

Step 3: Click on “Disk Defragementer”

Step 4: Click the “Settings” button and select the option that you want and click Ok, The first button is the best if you want your programs to start up fast.

Step 5: Select the drive which you would like to defragment from the drop down and select Ok

Points to keep in mind

It is best to shut all other applications before you start to defragment your drive and let the entire process take place before starting anything else.

It is best to defragment your hard drive at least once a month or even more if you are a heavy user to ensure peak performance of your system.
